Discover Viva Toro

Tucked along 987 Grand St, Brooklyn, NY 11211, United States, Viva Toro feels like the kind of neighborhood spot you almost want to keep to yourself. Williamsburg isn’t short on dining options, yet this lively Mexican kitchen manages to stand out without trying too hard. The first time I walked in, it was a Friday night, and every table was buzzing-friends sharing tacos, couples clinking margarita glasses, and a steady rhythm of Latin music filling the space. It immediately gave off that warm, welcoming vibe that turns first-time visitors into regulars.

The menu leans heavily into traditional Mexican flavors while keeping a modern Brooklyn twist. You’ll find staples like carne asada, al pastor, and chicken tinga tacos, but they’re layered with house-made salsas and fresh garnishes that elevate each bite. I ordered the birria tacos on my first visit after hearing other diners rave about them in online reviews. The slow-braised beef was rich and tender, tucked into crispy tortillas with melted Oaxaca cheese. Dipped into the consommé, it delivered that deep, savory punch that defines authentic birria. According to the National Restaurant Association, diners consistently rank authenticity and bold flavor among their top priorities when choosing ethnic cuisine, and this place clearly understands that expectation.

Beyond tacos, the menu covers enchiladas, quesadillas, and hearty burritos, plus vegetarian-friendly options like grilled vegetable fajitas. The guacamole is prepared fresh, and you can actually see the vibrant texture of hand-mashed avocado rather than an over-processed blend. That detail matters. Food scientists often note that freshness directly impacts both flavor perception and nutrient retention, and it shows here in the bright citrus notes and balanced seasoning. If you’re someone who appreciates thoughtful preparation, you’ll notice the difference immediately.

Drinks deserve their own spotlight. The margaritas-classic lime, spicy jalapeño, and seasonal fruit variations-are mixed with quality tequila rather than sugary shortcuts. During my second visit, I asked the bartender about their tequila selection. He walked me through the difference between blanco and reposado, explaining how aging affects flavor complexity. That kind of knowledgeable service builds trust. It’s not just about serving drinks; it’s about understanding the craft behind them.

The interior design strikes a balance between rustic and contemporary. Exposed brick walls meet colorful murals, and wooden tables are spaced comfortably enough for conversation. Even during peak hours, the staff moves efficiently. In my experience working with hospitality clients, I’ve seen how operational flow can make or break a diner’s perception. Here, plates arrive hot, orders are accurate, and servers check in without hovering. That smooth coordination reflects strong management and attention to detail.

Location-wise, being in Williamsburg puts Viva Toro in a prime spot for both locals and visitors exploring Brooklyn. It’s an easy walk from nearby subway lines, making it convenient for a casual weeknight dinner or weekend brunch. Yes, they serve brunch too-think chilaquiles topped with perfectly runny eggs and micheladas that hit just right. Reviews across major dining platforms frequently highlight the generous portions and fair pricing, which is increasingly important as New York dining costs continue to climb.

What stands out most, though, is consistency. I’ve visited three times over the past year, and each experience delivered the same quality and energy. In the restaurant world, consistency is often cited by experts like Danny Meyer as the backbone of lasting success. While I can’t speak for every single dish on the menu, what I’ve tried has been reliably satisfying. If there’s any limitation, it’s that the space can get loud during busy nights, so if you’re after a quiet, intimate dinner, timing your visit earlier in the evening might be wise.

From flavorful tacos and thoughtfully crafted cocktails to attentive service and a prime Brooklyn location, Viva Toro earns its reputation as a go-to Mexican restaurant in Williamsburg. It’s the kind of place where the menu invites exploration, the atmosphere encourages lingering, and the food keeps you planning your next visit before you’ve even paid the check.

  • We recently held a birthday brunch reservation for a party of fifteen. The staff was exceptionally accommodating, even when five guests arrived late. The food, including the burger and empanada, was delicious. Furthermore, the ninety-minute mimosa service was delightful and met our expectations.

  • Appetizer is tasty and food was good nice flavor. Chips good too. They have happy hour until 8pm which is cool but three choices only for $6.00 but the drinks were okay. I was there from 6pm to about 1am and had several margaritas and did not feel it. . But promise did not taste bad the drinks were good and not water down. Unisex bathrooms. But at least not gross or smelly. Decent spot and great ambiance. Clean and fun restaurant and turns into a party after hours which is cool. The music is more house, Latin and dance. Sprinkles of hip hop. You can also sign up to ride bull which is cool.

  • The food here is really good, they have really original drinks that goes with every season. And the atmosphere is nice, they played almost every type of music. So is a really nice place to celebrate a birthday or hanging out with friends. They even have a mechanic bull.

  • The food was good at brunch. I think the portions were a little skimpy in comparison to other brunch spots I’ve visited but otherwise everything was a 10/10. The vibes are nice, everyone has excellent customer service, the venue is clean, the bathroom is unisex BUT it has a staff person inside. The music caters to the Latin side a bit but that could be just because it was the P.R Day parade. Overall, I had a great time and enjoyed a space that was clean, courteous and welcoming. There is a mechanical bull, and menu flexibility even at brunch. While I don’t drink, my brunch partner was very happy and drunk after a pitcher.

  • Love the food here, wings are delicious! Cute spot for a date. We loved the octopus dish here, it’s unbelievable. Happy hour is the best in the area. Ride the bull, get your wing fix and down all the fries on Thursday nights
